It can be very useful to remember that doctors are used to being treated
like God. (It can be REALLY a problem when you're related to one:
I'm a doctor's kid.)

The "normal" personalities among the medical profession tend to go
into primary care medicine (family medicine, pediatrics). Surgeons
have a generally deserved reputation for being difficult.

No matter what the specialty, there are indeed doctors who
don't deal well with intelligent, informed patients.

True. It is also a *very* good idea to have a relative or friend with you
as much as possible after surgery. In addition to any possible issues
with the doctors, you may need someone to get a nurse if there are
any emergencies (such as post-surgery vomiting) or delays (such
as not getting that needed pain shot at 3am) as many hospitals
are VERY short-staffed, particularly between 11pm and 7am.
