I have had ulcers like that on two different occasions. I have been
told that they are an allergy, a vitamin deficiency, an unknown disease
of some kind (I was informed that a biopsy would tell for sure, but it
would hurt more than the lesions), a systemic problem, and a stress
reaction.
The first time, I eventually was diagnosed with Pernicious Anemia, and
after treatment for that, they went away (Pernicious is somewhat common
with Hashi's by the way). If you think you may be anemic, you might
want to talk to your doctor about that possibility.
About two years ago, they started again. It wasn't the Pernicious.
After seeing several doctors, specialists and an oral surgeon, the only
thing they all confirmed was that this was systemic. An ear, nose and
throat guy suggested that I gargle with a mix of half -Maalox and
half-liquid Benedryl to at least cut the inflammation (which actually
did kind of help, but not cure). I cut out toothpaste that had baking
soda, and T-lauryl sulfate in case there was an allergy. They still
didn't go away. The ear, nose and throat guy said it was a long shot,
but it might be related to thyroid.
In the past six months, I finally am working toward adequate treatment
of the thyroid thing, and had my first appointment with Doc Don last
month. I have noticed that in this past month, with different meds and
better treatment of the Hashi's, the lesions are much less prominent
than they used to be. So, maybe it is thyroid-related. I am learning
to believe that any weird thing that doctors can't explain probably IS
thyroid.
I'd be interested to know if anyone else out there has this too. It is
the one symptom I have not seen documentation for its relationship to
thyroid.
Good luck with this.
