It may be that a high dose of any iodine can induce Hashimoto's if the body
is so inclined. I did not realize my grandmother had Hashimoto's. I did know
she developed thyroid cancer after having a goiter removed.
I had a kidney xray in my mid twenties which contained a great deal of
radioactive iodine. I remember how much my thyroid hurt afterwards. I made
a big mistake that night, my father-in-law in all of his kindness took my
husband and I out for crab. Not only was crab the main menu item, but it is
one of my favorite dishes. I remember my thyroid hurting that night after
eating the crab.
Up until that time, I was relatively thin. I kept piling on the pounds and
getting more and more tired after that. Because my TSH was under 6.0,
despite having very low T4 and T3 readings, none of my doctors even suspected
thyroid problems until I too developed a nodule and my TSH rose above normal.
By that time I almost was in mydexic coma.
