1) From the National Cancer Institute - Meat cooked at
very high temps, like on George Foreman type grills,
may contain high levels of cancer causing
'heterocyclic amines' (HCAs). One way to prevent this
is to partially cook the meat (2 minutes) in the
microwave prior to grilling. Discarding the juice
between steps is optimal. Lower levels of heat
(roasting, baking, stewing, crockpot) produce lower
levels of HCAs. (I assume this warning pertains to
outdoor grills as well, although the temps there may
not be as high).
2) The journal of 'Medicine and Science in Sports and
Exercise' has given the green light to cardio exercise
for weight trainers and bodybuilders. They reference a
study of 30 individuals, split up into groups of
cardio only; weight training only; and mixed
cardio/weight training. Their findings suggest the
mixed training does not impair hypertrophy or strength
gains, and in fact may improve hypertrophy by causing
additional growth in type II muscle fibers.
