I have a friend who relays the story about he and his
father would gather wild rice in northern Minnesota.
They would float by in a boat and just pull the
'stalks' (or whatever) over into the boat. According
to his memory, they would gather rather large amounts
-enough to sell to neighbors and friends.

I'm sure paleos could have done the same in various
parts of the world.
