Perhaps, like me, they have yet to encounter a non-Jewish Pearl or Perl, etc.
Or maybe they researched his background and work experience as well.
What's the point of this? Their crime is no more or less horrendous no matter
his background. But it's highly likely they did know his background and
selected him on that ground, feeling they'd get more sympathy in their neck of
the woods.
