I'll jump in with recollections of projects of a decade or so ago (neither
one mine):

One project it was recommended to prep the surface of LCC with detergent
wash, I recall Palmolive liquid dish detergent. Another project was to etch
the surface with muriatic acid. I haven't ever stopped to think of the
ramifications of these treatments and now that it is out there, maybe
someone will.

There is a little lead oxide--or what I would imagine is PlO (who would
guess I never took Chemistry?), unless of course is just plain NYC dirt.
Copper is well hidden under the lead.
