THRONGS JOIN NEW WEB SERVICES EFFORT
IBM and Microsoft have jointly launched a new industry consortium that will
educate businesses on how to build compatible and interoperable Web systems and
services, and how to develop policy recommendations about industry-wide
standards. The Web Services Interoperability Organization (WSIO) counts IBM,
Microsoft, BEA Systems, Accenture, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Oracle, SAP, and
Fujitsu as founding members with agenda-setting powers. WSIO supporters include
VeriSign, United Airlines, Compaq, Qwest, Ford, and others. Microsoft .Net
Platform Strategy Group director Neil Charney said that his company signed on
because "we want to help drive the requirements of standards that will be done
elsewhere." "Web services" stands for software that is available over the
Internet and that can be run on any device from PCs to hand-helds, and is
expected to play an important role in m-commerce, e-commerce, and Internet
