This effect was also covered in the Scientific America ( May '87) article
"Glucose and Aging" which explained how excess glucose cross-binds with
protein molecules in the eye limiting normal resiliancy of the lens.  This
stiffened lens would not flatten enough for long-range vision.

This cross-binding also causes wrinkles and liver spots as well as a host of
other disorders.
