#6. IF YOU HAVE INGESTED GLUTENS, DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG IT WAS BEFORE SHOWING
SYMPTOMS? = The average response was probably several days. It varied
widely, from "almost instantly" to "several hours" or several weeks. Other:
"Usually within 4-6 hours I get gastro. symptoms; one exposure to glutens
usually doesn't cause outbreaks." / "In my gut it's 1/3 of an hr.; on skin,
24-48 hrs." / "At one point, licking an envelope while paying bills caused
significant itching in just a few minutes." Others said they weren't sure,
especially if they were unaware of consumed gluten.
#7. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUSPICIONS AS TO WHAT UNUSUAL INCIDENT OR EVENT MAY HAVE
INITIALLY TRIGGERED YOUR DH? = "In 1981, overdosing on pizza. Bread is
really bad, but combined with tomatoes and I am covered in rash." / "I'm
pretty sure, when my docs thought I had MS (and put me) on IV steroids." /
"I suddenly developed chronic diarrhea and a bad rash. I lost 30 lb. in 8
mo. before being diagnosed. That was 20 yrs. ago. (I was) going through a
divorce then, so stress may have triggered CD or DH." / "Childbirth." [I'm
pretty sure she means GIVING birth, rather than her own. :) ] / "Influenza
at age 15." / "Have absolutely no idea; developed 4 mo. into Freshman year
at college, or perhaps because of being 3000 mi. from home. Did not feel
stressed, however." / "A series of auto-immune diseases after returning
from southeast Asia w/infectious hepatitis in 1966; diabetes in 1971; DH in
1992; also cataract surgery & dry eyes in '92, CD in '96, psoriasis in
2000." / "Mine first erupted during the 3rd trimester of my 3rd pregnancy."
/ "Childbirth C section." / "My trigger event occurred at age 40 when I
switched jobs." / "I think after I got married and had a baby, which were
both very stressful." / "Moved & graduated from college--had to deal with
'real' life." / "Who knows, but my best guess would be, after having a
cancerous thyroid removed, when I had to take several doses of radioactive
iodine capsules (get rid of residual cells left), one a mega dose that made
me a 'bubble boy' sitting isolated in a hospital room for 3 days; also a cat
scan each time after each event." / "No clue--unless it was the stress of
graduating from high school and having to get my first job since that's
about the time it started." / "I didn't get DH until I was 42. I was in an
extremely stressful job situation at the time, and I believe that the
initial manifestation was connected with the stress. My understaning (from
reading literature) is that there is a genetic susceptability to DH--some
people never show it, but under the 'right' conditions, others will. I think
the stress triggered mine, although there's no way to prove this."
