Ian,
I had the same problem, and what I did was disable
the Fast Find function. I think what's happening, is
Fast Find is indexing your computer in case you were to
hunt something with it. Seems like it was in
MSCONFIG, but not real sure. Someone else here will
know.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Mysterious lights.......

Win98SE, AMD 1800+XP, Gig 7VTXH+, 512 PC2100 DDR.

Just about got all the bugs out of my new system........except this one: (if
it is one!)
The new Maxtor D740X-6L 40Gb 100ATA HDD occasionally goes through periods of
intense drive light activity.
The light activity shows on the case LED, but it's also mirrored by the LED
on the underside of the drive.
Sometimes this only lasts a few minutes, sometimes an hour. Right now it's
been flickering for 30 minutes or so. The flicker rate is invariably very
fast.
I haven't been able to tie the light display to any particular activity, but
I did copy 3-4 gigs of files from the old drive to the new, about 30 minutes
back.
However, I've rebooted twice since then.
At first I thought the drive might be faulty, but it seems to be ok in all
other respects.
The HD LED wires to the mobo pins are connected properly.
It's running on an 80 wire ribbon, from IDE1, as master to an 8Gb Seagate
Medalist, tho it does the same when it's alone on the ribbon.
Before I attempt to complain to Maxtor, has anyone an idea about what might
be causing it?
TIA

Ian Porter
