Volkard,
I think your friends problem may relate to the same situation that
applies to a Win 2000 that I setup to share with a Win98 computer. The
XP machine must have an account setup that has the same user name and
password that the Win 98 machine has. The password in Win98 would be the
microsoft sharing password. Also, you will need a common protocol.
Netbui is the only one that comes to mind that I used on a Win98 to
Win2000 machine. TCP/IP would not match up like it did from the Win98
machine to a previous Win95 machine. Both were running Novell but
IPX/SPX would not match up either. Netbui was the only common
denominator I could get to work. Also, when logging in to XP, you have
to use the account that I mentioned previously above. If you login under
any other profile in XP, it probably won't show the Win98 machine in
network neighborhood.

Components I used were:
Client for Microsoft Networks
TCP/IP (for Internet)
Netbui (for the common protocol for both Win2000 and Win98)
IPX/SPX that was the protocol for Novell (I doubt you will have to have
that if you are not on a Novell Network.)

quoted below:

A friend of mine is having a problems actually getting into his XP
machine
from a 98 box. He is running 10/100 network cards, has run Home network
setup wizard on the XP box and created a floppy to run on the 98, and has
run it there... (although he's not seeing an ICS icon in the systray). He
can see and enter the 98 box from XP and has Internet access from the 98
machine. He can see the XP box from 98, but keeps getting a password
error
when trying to access it. He has created an account in XP with the
machine
name for 98 with no luck. He can do everything but get files from the XP
machine to the 98 box. His XP setup does require him to enter a password
to
get on, and I believe this is part of the problem, but the standard
practice of adding that user to XP doesn't seem to work as it does in
NT/2000. Any ideas??? Thanx.
