Sounds like the drive is fried.  In the states, they sell
for under $20.  and you can often pull one from an old pc
being discarded by schools, offices, pc repair shops, etc.
In general, the power cord can provide different voltages,
depending on how it is connected.  Connecting it backwards
can zap the device with too much voltage.  Usually, the
power cord and the ribbon cable both have one edge with a
red stripe - they should be next to each other when
connected to most devices.
