Leslie,

The only way windows knows how to open a file with a given program is
from the three letter extension at the end. These extensions include
.txt for text files .doc for Microsoft Word files .wpd for WordPerfect
documents and .mp3 for MP3 audio files. windows has a registry of all
these extensions and their corresponding programs. I usually get the
dialogue to select a program when a file does not have an extension.
When I used dos, I unfortunately didn't save programs with a file
extension and dos programs, such as WordPerfect, didn't add them as they
do now. If it is an old file, it might be a text or word processing file
and can be opened in Microsoft Word.

Kelly

Subject: OPEN WITH...

Dear,

I always get frustrate with "OPEN WITH" after I clicked any file on my
computer. I have no idea or know which program can read the file.

Do we have any special program of "automatic select the right program" to
open the file for me?

My computer is Windows98.

Leslie--
