  You should be able to pull the old CPU without detaching the clips
from the motherboard.

  On all the clip assemblies I've worked with, the thing on the top
side of the motherboard that is fitted for a screwdriver is a "nut",
holding onto a "bolt" inserted from the underside of the motherboard.
If you undo it, you will have a loose bolt floating around under the
motherboard (potentially shorting random contacts to the case...).
  To change the clip assemblies, you will need to remove all of your
expansion cards and possibly any overhanging drives, unscrew the
motherboard from its mounting points, and lift it away from the case -
- and then reassemble everything when you're done.
