the simplest and cheapest method is to
install network cards in both computers and connect them via a Cat5
crossover cable and use the built in
internet connection sharing (ICS) in Win98.
It is quite easy to setup and works very well.
If you want to network more than two computers you will need a network hub
or switch.
You can also use a hardware router to share the internet connection, it
costs  more money
but it also adds a layer of security preventing your computer being accessed
by outside computers.
There are also free firewall software programs to block others from
accessing your computer,
