I just built a system a couple of weeks ago with a Maxtor 40 GB 7200 HD.
The jumper settings in the documentation that came with my drive were
apparently for the Quantum, because the diagram did not match the pins on my
drive.  If your drive is model 6L040J2, then this page will have a diagram
with the correct jumper settings.  You're right;  the master setting is the
first vertical pair of pins on the left, just next to the single pin in the
left corner.
