Be careful with "erstwhile".

A woman who ran for East Lansing City Council in 1977, a former manager of
an upscale dress shop, was described during the campaign in the MSU State
News as "an erstwhile clothes horse."

She narrowly lost the election, and years later, still nursed a grudge
over that characterization.
