The listserv troubled by a bad conscience and a good memory.

Come on - why doesn't anybody check the archives of
this mailing list.
We had this conversation about whorehouses only 2-3
months ago!

As for the fieldwork, I guess my colleagues and I have
averaged about one brothel or adult bookstore every
couple of years (in terms of inspections). Of course,
that doesn't count the projects in some parts of Asia
where you could consider every hotel to be a brothel
(or so it seems at times with the number of late night
phone calls offering massage and other assorted
recreational pursuits).

Intriguing concept to undertake a code review prior to
commencing fieldwork ...

Background however is that a number of the state
governments in Australia have, in order to control the
prostitution industry and to reduce the
criminalisation of the business, legalised brothels
(but not other traditional venues for plying of the
trade). The problem develops when the developers of
the problem apply for a permit. The local councils
are the approval bodies, and they delay the process
because their ratepayers don't want a brothel in the
region (NIMBY syndrome). Hence the reason for my
whorehouse/warehouse discussion previously - most
brothels end up in areas zoned for industrial use
only.

I'm happy to consider providing first-hand reports of
the field inspections, but I'll need substantial
financial assistance to fund the research project - is
anybody prepared to write the grant application for
me?
