Asilomar-Monterey Peninsula-California
Seismic Retrofit for Historic Buildings
October 8-9, 2001
This two-day technical workshop will present historic building issues related
to seismic rehabilitation and the relevant codes and standards. What codes
relate to existing buildings and seismic retrofit? What triggers these code
requirements? How do these requirements differ in various seismic zones? The
workshop will cover Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 310 and 356 as
well as the UCBC provisions. Each historic building has its own inherent
strengths and weaknesses. How do we evaluate these for unreinforced masonry,
concrete, steel, and wooden buildings? What seismic strengthening techniques
are appropriate for various types of constructions? How do we evaluate
alternative solutions to select the best solution with the least damage to
the historic character and fabric of the resource? What does the future hold
for new concepts in building retrofit and the development of codes and
standards? The workshop is being offered as a post conference technical
workshop of the Association for Preservation Technology International
Conference, October 3-7, 2001. The conference and workshop is being
co-sponsored by the National Park Service, California Department of Parks and
Recreation, California Preservation Foundation, and US/ICOMOS.
