Has anyone used this Icom model which is sold with only a dry cell battery
case and billed as a "Sports HT?"

It is usually sold for around $95. I think the same model can be bought with
a re-chargeable battery for about $130.

Anyway, if you have used it, how friendly is it to a totally blind ham? I
have two friends who are considering getting back on the air with this radio
primarily because of its low price. I want to steer them toward something
like the THF6A if necessary.
