My Fellow Liberians,
News concerning the ongoing fighting in Liberia is very disappointing
and disturbing, giving the fact that we have our professional
colleagues, friends and family members who appear vulnerable to the
current wave of violence and political instability in the country.
Few days ago, we had a round table debate in Madison concerning the
current state of affairs in Liberia which was very interesting. Many of
my friends viewed and debunked Charles Taylor's wolf cry about possible
threat to kick him out of office by rebel forces. The debate which
brought together Liberians and residents from the Milwaukee and Chicago
areas drew attention around the cause of the rebels advancement near
Monrovia at this time of the year when Liberians are anticipating the
change of government through national election next year.
Majority of them at the debate overwhelmingly concluded that the current
clashes
that propelled Taylor's state of emergency declaration and imposition of
exit vista are all ploy orchestrated by Taylor and his acolytes to abort
the upcoming national election in order to aggrandize power and continue
to recklessly pillage the resources of the country.
Are these allegations true? Though I am left with reservation on these
allegations made by my colleagues based on their assumptions without any
proof. Some pointed to Taylor's arrogance and recalcitrant behavorial
patterns since the 1990s. I am still left with doubts about the real
circumstances surrounding this war rumor.
Is there anyone out there who can share with us his or her understanding
about what is going on? Are the assertions made by my colleagues true?
I invite all of you who are subscribers of this ALJA listserv to share
your views and opinions on this grave matter. If you wish to opine, you
