GEORGE WEAH HAS LANDED
Full name: George Manneh Oppong Ousman Weah. Occupation: striker Chelsea.
After four-and-a-half years with Milan in which he helped the side to two
Scudetti, Weah has joined former team-mate Marcel Desailly at Gianluca
Vialli“s Chelsea. He could even make his Premier League debut tonight
against Tottenham, although he will not be eligible to play in the Champions
League having already played for Milan in the same competition.
Ironically, Weah left Milan on the eve of the Coppa Italia derby, having so
often proved instrumental in previous matches against city rivals Inter. He
scored the winner in the last derby, for instance, back on 23 October 1999.
But it all began on 27 August 1995, when Weah arrived in Milan from Paris
Saint Germain. He scored on his debut, away to Padova. Whilst Weah“s last
match in red and black took place a month ago, against Atalanta in the
second leg of the Coppa Italia. So far this season, he has made 10 League
appearances in which he has netted four goals, but a blow to his shoulder
has kept him out of action recently.
All in all, Weah“s total number of appearances for Milan amount to 147, with
his goal count standing at 58. The vast majority of those are accounted for
by the League, where he made 114 appearances (46 goals). Weah is still the
only African footballer to have won FIFA“s World Footballer of the Year
award, in 1995. Considered by many experts to have been Milan“s strongest
striker, second only to Marco Van Basten and Nordahl, there can be no doubt
that George Weah“s contribution to Milan“s success, and his charisma, will
make him a firm favourite with Rossoneri fans for years to come. Indeed, few
could forget his goal against Verona in 1996, which he torpedoed home after
dribbling past 7 of the opposition. For that, and so many other reasons, he
will always be remembered. Good luck, George.
