Hi,
AMD went through a progression of chips.
They have a code on the chip which you can check at the AMD website to
specifically identify the chip.
Early Athlons were Slot A style, now passe. The T-bird chips for most
part are the socket type (there were a few slot A designed as they made the
change over) and ran at 200 and 266 bus speed. They reason they went back
to the socket is that the figured out how to put the 2nd level cash into
the core of the chip and did not need the slot A board to house it outside
the core. These are the Thunderbird (T-bird) chips. The XP series ware
the next generation and started at the 1600+ and are all 266 bus speed
right now. They have more transistors and a improved instruction set. All
the above chips are for single chip board use.
The MP chip is for use on dual CPU main boards and are more expensive than
the XP and require more power than the XP's. I beleive they make the pin
housing a different color than the one used for the XP's which is a gray
ceramic base.
The AMD chips are ETREMELY FRAGILE. The core is the silicon (glass) area
on the center of the chip. It is very easy to damage that core by improper
fan installation. So much so AMD had a 42 page paper on the proper
installaion techniques of the fan at their website. Check the glass area
and make sure it is smooth and the edges are perfectly staight. Use a
magnifying glass to do so. If any chips, dings, or cracks on that silicon
area, the chip is NG.
According to the chart on the Epox website for recommended processors, your
board has been tested to run with the chip you picked. If it is not
working, make sure the bus speed is change to 266 (marked 133 on the
board). 2nd, try clearing the cmos properly before booting up to the new
CPU, this is often very necessary with EPOX boards. Running that size chip
your power supply should be 300 watts minimum and AMD recommended. Also
the heat sink fan should be larger than one yuo would use for an lesser
t-bird or duron.
God Bless America!
