Marilyn: Possibly, Mandrake 9 does need plenty of resouces like RAM.

I'd do the basic install just a workstation with only one desktop (KDE) and resist installing all
the other components like games, development, scientific etc.

It'll probably run very slow, you maybe better off with a 'smaller' distro. Someone else maybe able
to advise you on this.

But don't throw the old box out, you can make a great firewall for you internet connection with such
a box using Linux
