When I boot, I get an error during Windows boot: "during initialization of IOS:
Windows protection error...need to restart"

When I rebooted, it booted into SAFE mode. All seemed OK in safe mode, but when
I rebooted from there, the above error repeated.
Step-by-step boot with confirmation shows last file to run before the above IOS
error message is msmouse.vdx.
I have done the following: ran a system file check; Norton virus scan (latest
definitions); BOClean trojan scan (latest version and definitions); replaced the
CMOS battery (cleared the BIOS checksum error); tried clean boot per MS
knowledge base articles on this error;  removed recentlyinstalled programs; and
others. In safe mode, Explorer shows a: floppy (real), b: floppy (phantom), c:
hd (real), d: hd (real) and e: floppy (phantom). Don't know why or how to
resolve. System contains HD partitioned o c: and d:, floppy a:, CD drive, CD-RW
drive and Zip. CD drives and Zip are not accessible in safe mode.
The boot log seems normal, with the exception of many font load failures with a
code of 0016.

Suggestions from elsewhere (grc.techtalk) include that this is not an OS problem
so no need to reinstall Win, change CMOS battery (done), and many others. In
general, I've tried all of them with no success other than to renew battery
(eliminated aBIOS checksum error reported in the DMI event log.
Any suggestions?
