Yes. Because he is non-verbal, not yet a speller, and it is debatable if he
knows the alphabet, it is difficult to tell what he is seeing other than the
presence or absence of an object. Magnification does not seem to be an
option at this time.
Voice recognition also traps the keyboard and there is software that allows
JFW to coexist and work efficiently with Dragon (JawBone). Someone must have
been asked to do the same for switch/scanning software. Who are they and
where are they?
