Hello listmates,
I need your help to educate others!
I am a graduate student (don't have an official Celiac diagnosis yet) in a
Masters in Counseling program, and I am trying to get out information about
Celiac to my professional counseling colleagues and to my professors. My
research shows that there is a significant relationship between Celiac disease
and symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as other psychiatric symptoms.
After I went gluten-free, I had an incredible and complete remission of long-
term anxiety problems, and am wondering if other people have had similar types
of experiences!
When I present this information, I would love to have human stories to go with
the research. I am hoping some of you might be willing to share a little
personal information with me about your experiences with depression and
anxiety, in the name of educating professional counselors about Celiac and the
impacts it has on people. My only difficulty is that I need this information
ASAP!
If you are willing to share information, I am interested in the following:
-Were you or your child ever diagnosed with an emotional/psychological/learning
problem before getting diagnosed with Celiac? (Anxiety, Depression, ADHD, etc.)
-Were your gastrointestinal symptoms misdiagnosed as an emotional/mental/stress
condition, because doctors couldn't find a cause?
-How long did you have between the start of symptoms and a diagnosis of celiac?
-Did some of your emotional/mental symptoms improve after you went gluten-free?
What symptoms improved, and how long did it take?
-Did any of you have predominantly mental/emotional symptoms at any time,
rather than GI symptoms?
-Any other stories relating Celiac to mental health are appreciated.
Thanks so much in advance-your stories will help me educate mental health
professionals about Celiac.
Take care,
Cindy Schaefer
