You don't write what your operating system is, but since your computer is
brand new I am going to guess it is some version of XP.
You probably have the wrong language setting enabled.

Go to Start>>>>Control Panel>>>>Regional and Language Options >>>Click on
the Advanced Tab and make sure the Language spin box has English(United
States) selected, and the selection box is MAC -Roman.
