I had trouble with a HP cdrw also and HP told me to check the DMA box in the
cdrom properties. Worked for me

Subject: Re: CD RW makes computer freez

I'm having the same problem with an HP CD Writer. The computer is an
AMD 333MHz with 192Mb of RAM, Windows ME, and a 2.5GB HD. Anytime you
put a CD in (blank, software, or music media) the computer will
"freeze". It doesn't give any error messages at all. The only way to
"un-freeze" the computer is by ejecting the CD that's in the drive.

I've already tried switching primary, secondary, master, and slave,
but none of the configurations worked. I'm just wondering if some drives
(the HP CD Writer in particular) require certain software from the
manufacturer. I have not installed the software from HP because the
disks were lost. I thought that it would, at least play a music CD
though.

I ordered the correct software from HP, but does anyone have any
ideas about this freezing problem?
