Hi,

I have windows 98 installed on a generic Intel machine (Celeron 400
Pentium II and ABIT mother board). A few weeks ago I installed a new
60GB hard drive and reinstalled Windows 98 on a 7.9 GB "C:" partition
on the new drive.
Here is the problem I am facing:
When I shut down Windows from Start->Shut Down->Shut Down, the
computer seemingly shuts down. I see the message saying "It is safe
to shutdown the computer" and as expected the computer powers down. I
do not hear the CPU fan running and the monitor goes dark (though I
have to switch it off as it is powered separately). The problem is,
I still see the "Num Lock" light ON on the keyboard. If I press the
"Num Lock" key the light stays ON. If, at this point, I unplug the
keyboard the light goes OFF but when I plug the keyboard back in, it
comes back ON. I assume (please correct me if I am wrong) that the
computer is not shut down completely. It is bothering me a lot. So
to get a complete shut down, I push the POWER ON switch on the box
that makes the computer boots up (I was hoping that Num Lock would
turn OFF). During the boot up if I push the power switch again
before the Windows loads (right where I see the info about my system)
the computer power downs but this time it powers down completely i.e.
I do not see the "Num Lock" light ON. Before the reinstall of windows
I was able to achieve the complete shut down from the Start->Shut
Down menu and I did not have to go through hoops to get the complete
shut down.

Here are the steps I performed on the computer to install the new
disk.

1. Upgraded the BIOS in order to recognize the 60GB hard drive. (I
had each and every BIOS setting noted down before BIOS upgrade and I
have set the BIOS back to original settings, off course adding the
new 60GB hard drive).

2. I have used the compressed air to clean the insides of the box. I
remembered getting some kind of liquid coming out of the can when I
sprayed at a closer range so I made sure I would not start computer
immediately to avoid a short circuit. I have also sprayed the POWER
ON SWITCH button pretty vigorously.

3. Installed the windows 98 on the C: partition on the new dirve,
which is Primary Master. The old drive is sitting as D: as the
primary slave. The CD-ROM is on the secondary IDE.

4. I have turned the power management off in BIOS. On windows 98 I
have custom power management where every things stays on (every
setting is "Never").

I apologize for the long winding mail but I want to provide max
information.

TIA

Ahmad
