My thanks to you all for your valuable feedback.  Indeed, there were extra
USB generic devices found by Device Manager when I went into Safe Mode.  I
shall also be mindful of the weak power supply that may have come with the
Belkin USB mini-hub.  What USB hub to buy in the future may be an
issue.  Never again will I load more than one USB device at a
time.  Neither will I ever again try to hot plug a USB device.
