Jim,
Com ports 1 & 2, unless shut off in the CMOS, will be assigned to serial
ports 1 & 2. When you installed the modem and it assigned itself to Com 3,
it won't necessarily show up under the Com ports in the Device Manager. It
will share the IRQ with Com 1, so don't use the modem and a device connected
to Com 1 at the same time.
Have you tried the modem? It sounds like it should already be working.
