I don't think this is the problem as I have used an external voice
synthesizer on Comm1.  I thought perhaps reducing the 25-pin data cable to
a 9-pin for my serial port jack was the problem, but the only leads on the
TH-F6A end are from the mike/headphone jacks.  Those few leads couldn't
multiply to 9 pins even.  Perhaps the cable is bad or the adapter has gone
bad on me.  I will try to investigate that.
