Following is a summary of the responses that I received from my 1/19/98
posting on structuring service provision for patrons with disabilities.
Thanks very much to everyone who responded! If you have additional
comments or ideas, or did not respond the first time around, I'm still
collecting information. Please also let me know if you have
questions about the information. Thanks - Beth Fraser

Coordination of Services for Patrons with Disabilities

Following are four models being used in academic libraries to coordinate
services for patrons with disabilities. Information for this summary was
gathered from replies to posts made to several lists and through personal
contacts. The responses were primarily from academic libraries, thus the
models more directly relate to this setting. Each model includes job
responsibilities, job titles and institutions using this model.

1. Assignment included in a Librarian Position

A librarian is assigned the responsibility of coordinating services with
10 - 40% of their job assigned to this. Typically a public
services/reference librarian is assigned this responsibility in addition
to their other duties. However, it can fit into other positions, for
example, Electronic Resources Access Librarian (UWisc/Stout), and Head of
Reserve (UPenn), Director of Access (Columbia) are responsible for this
area.

Coordinator of Services and Equipment for Customers with Disabilities
(UAz)
ADA Coordinator
Coordinator of Library Services for Patrons with Disabilities (UPenn, NYU,
Southern Ill)
ADA Liaison (OR State)

conducts staff trainings
produces brochures/web site, other resources
works with Disabled Student Services and Computing/Adaptive Technology Lab
to identify adaptive technology/special equipment for purchase
liaison to Disabled Student Services, Disabled Services Offices
liaison to university committee on ADA
keeps current on issues and trends

2. Committee

A committee carries out the responsibilities described above.
(Northwestern)

produces brochures
coordinates training, goal of 2 events/year
has a sub-comm on adaptive tech/special equipment
DSS/DSO staff invited to meeting 1x year to maintain contact, or one
committee member attends University meetings as a liaison

3. AD Public Services Head is assigned role as ADA Coordinator with
liaisons in units

Liaison with campus-wide body Coordinate services through a network of
liaisons in each unit. Under this model, it is possible to split
circulation and reference services. The Head of Circulation is assigned
role of meeting materials access needs.

ADA Coordinator (Columbia, Rutgers)

4. Full time Staff Member

FT position focusing on areas not covered by the curriculum, or entirely
on services for patrons with disabilities

Services to Diverse Populations (Maryland)
Special Services Coordinator
Office for Library Services to Persons with Disabilities, 1 FT Coordinator
reports to Head of Access (Penn St)
