If you are unable to complete the installation, how can you get into safe mode? I forget how much space Win 98 SE needs to do the installation, but I recollect it's some multiple of the total space of the full install, which is somewhere around 120-150 Mb. When it checks for drive space at the beginning of the install do you get any warnings? If not, I'd suggest you still do the minimal install (compact, mobile, or something like that).I'd recommend you consider using a larger drive, if possible, because you won't have a lot of storage space to install software or anything else when the OS occupies 25% of your drive. If cash is a problem, go to www.overstock.com, click on computers & peripherals. You can find refurbed name brand drives for $65 for 20 Gb. Otherwise, go to www.pricewatch.com or www.pricegrabber.com for new drives. You can now get 10-20 gig drives for well under a $100. A 540 Mb drive is going to have a short useful life unless you install and store to removeable media.
