The story I heard was Sir Walter Raleigh brought them back. They served the
leaves to the queen. It was so repulsive (or did she get sick?) that it
took 50 years before they became accepted. Now Raleigh lived from
1552-1618, so that would put acceptance in the mid 17th century.
