GeForce DirectX 8 interface initialization failure

On my GeForce 2 MX 200, the DirectX 8.1 installation went successful.
... But here are the very bad news and a major issue: I ran the DirectX
diagnostics utility, DxDiag and everything went all well until I tested
the Direct3D DirectX 8 interface testing
(Direct3D DirectX 7 interface testing is OK), It failed with the message
in the status:

Failure at step 5 (GetDeviceCaps)...

and I can't test the Direct3D using the DirectX 8 interface!!

What is the cause and can this be resolved, or will I have to get a least
a GeForce 2 Ti??

This happened when using the 21.83 Detonators.
