We hired a boatload (literally--their feet were still wet) of cobol
programmers direct from India on emergency visas.  Most spoke fluent King's
English, so it was easy to communicate.  The thing I remember most was the
exotic aromas coming from their "bullpen" at meal-time.

They scoured lines and lines of code every day for months.  I'd have gone
stir-crazy!

some of my code from 28 years ago as a trainee are still being run and lots
of stuff older than that. that is why y2k scared the hell out of the powers
that be. they got retirees to come back to help with that stuff.
