Hi Peter,

I think it's just the case of your compputer's getting old!  As you put more
and more stuff on your hard drive the stuff you put on takes up more memory
and processer power.  Not only the amount of software you have but also the
later versions, as they are written for more powerful machines take up more
resources as I'm finding with an oldish PC that I have.

Things you can do:
1.  Use msconfig to look at what programs are loading into memory at start
up and you might be able to save some memory here.
2. Consider getting some more memory fro your laptop.
3. Have a go at defragmenting your hard drive.  It only really speeds things
up if your hard drive is very fragmented but is good practice for other
reasons.
