I did my original "test/play" installation of WinXP Pro (OEM)
to a drive that had a bare bones install of an unused Win98.
It is a  throw-away drive with a "play" installation of both OS(s),
and I even did it in THIS computer, a P-233mmx while the new
MB tested its hard drive, PS, etc.  (I'm running 41*C cpu temp.)

Much to my surprise, it detected the Win98 and (refused?) to
install on "C".  It created a boot menu, so now I have a dual
boot.  I did not read any of the instructions except the ones
that appeared on the screen as I did it. It was 3am and I did
not feel like reading that little paper "manual" that comes with it.
(I did not do any of this on a "good" computer HD.)
      YMMV.
PS: Unlike one of the first screens from MS that says activate now,
MS says other places (their WEB site?) to stabilize your hardware
installation and activate when everything is installed.
I have heard you do NOT want to miss the (thirty day?) limit
since you will be securely locked out of your system AND data.
(Results vary depending on installation options.)
PPS: I've already frozen it and had to do a keyboard exit
and shutdown... All with NO software yet...
