Cherno,
You're, indeed, right. Aline Sittoye Diatta led a fierce resistance against
Portuguese colonial domination. In fact, the main female campus at
University Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar has been renamed from Claudel to Aline
Sittoye Diatta.
African history is replete with such female warriors much to the ignorance
of most of our educated folks. Some years ago, I was astounded to hear a
female panelist at Gambia College (Brikama Campus) state that women started
gaining power and status after the advent of Islam, to the applause of the
students.
I could not resist, but intervene at the end of her speech to set the record
straight. Of course, that did not win me the support of some of the
students who saw me as an intruder making anti-Islamic statements.
Hamadi.
