Panasonic, Sony and Bose all have come out with a must-have product for the
frequent flier -- noise-canceling headphones that wipe out the in-flight
roar, not to mention muffling the sound of crying babies and endless
updates from the cockpit. The models operate on the same theory -- inside
each ear cup, a microphone listens for a continuous low-frequency noise
(such as the roar made by airplane engines as you hurtle along at 600 mph).
The signal from the microphone is fed into circuitry that generates an
equal but opposite sound, thus eliminating much of the noise before it
reaches your eardrum. (Los Angeles Times 8 Apr 2002)
