I just came from the Maxtor site on another problem.
They say if the bus is noisy, force the HD to a lower
speed in the BIOS to help troubleshoot it.
PIO 2 is recommended.
(In an Award BIOS, this would be under Integrated Peripherals,
IDE Primary/Secondary Master/Slave PIO - not set to "AUTO")

Same idea,  You might want to turn off L1 and L2 cache till
the install is over...
