The dragon is slain.  In the process of flipping the machine around I
disconnected keyboard.  Forgot when I next tested system to reconnect
keyboard and voila! it booted past that point.  The previous keyboard had
been cleaned a couple days before and I guess that started its slow death,
though I never say a keyboard error.  Changed keyboard.
