Hi, my name is Mike Tetlow I'm a 42 year old male who was diagnosed
w/celiac in September 2001 by endoscopy. My symptoms were atypical with my
primary complaint being dizziness with some stomach gurgling and fatigue.
I had brain surgery for a benign temporal lobe tumor in July of 1999 so the
initial focus was on neurological functions. That exam was normal except
for a slight lag in my left eye in eye movements to the left. My most
recent MRI and CT scans showed only normal post op scar tissue and nothing
in areas that would cause dizziness. ENG in the spring showed perfectly
normal inner ear function although I often have sensations of pressure
around my right ear and tinnitus is constant in my left ear. My dizziness
is a constant sensation of the inside of my head taking a second to catch
up to my eye and head movements. Driving or riding is always nauseating as
is computer work or any fast movements. Watching sports or action shows on
TV is uncomfortable or impossibe. Most recently an up and down rocking
sensation occurs to the beat of my heartbeat when I rest the back of my
head against my pillow or the headrest of the recliner. My IgG antigliaden
antibodies are normal as are my endomysial antibodies, indicating that I am
staying Gluten free in my diet. My doctor says my vitamin A,E,D,B12 and
Iron among others are normal. The only thing that is borderline is
Beta-carotene so I'm eating more spinach and carrots to get that to the low
normal level of 10. I have been tested for Lyme's disease and Addison's
disease and both are okay. I just sent blood samples to Alletest for ELISA
food sensitivity testing as I heard of one case where rice caused dizziness
in a self diagnosed Celiac and maybe eliminating a sensitivity will speed
up healing and help my dizziness. My neurologist says that Celiac
certainly can affect the central nervous system and cause dizziness but he
has given up on finding the root cause. Several light headed spells have
occurred about every other month since 1999 surgery and may or may not be
related. Two times I have had full room spinning vertigo, the last before
I stopped working in November, both times ENT specialists ruled out
Meniere's or positional vertigo.
My anxiety level has forced me to try several medications that all caused
increased dizziness including Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, Clonazepam, Lorazepam
to a lesser degree and wellbutrin which increased anxiety to unmanageable
levels. I currently take Lorazepam and more Meclizine to control the extra
dizziness. Sucralfate has helped control nausea caused by dizziness and
help me develop an appetite which I haven't had since last spring when all
this dizziness started.
If anyone out there has any specific information about how Celiac causes
dizziness or how to treat it I would appreciate a response. It seems some
deficiency is likely but bloodwork shows nothing.
I have read that a surgery or accident can trigger celiac but how or why
no one seems to know. I also had a neuromuscular disease called
Polymyositis in 1976 that was treated by Prednisone to a full recovery, but
that may offer a clue to someone out there.
Thank you in advance for any help anyone can offer!!!!!!!!
                                                Thanks, Mike Tetlow
