Wireless Website Will Control Air Conditioners
    [ April 09, 2001 ]
IBM and air conditioning giant Carrier Corp. said Monday they plan to
offer Web-enabled air conditioners in Europe this summer that can be
    controlled wirelessly.

Financial terms of the collaboration were not disclosed.

Owners of the air conditioners will be able to set temperatures or
switch the units on or off wirelessly using a website called
    Myappliance.com, the companies said.

Carrier plans to launch the service on Internet-enabled mobile phones
this summer to several hundred commercial and residential customers in
European countries, the two companies said.

IBM will supply the services, software and hardware for
    Myappliance.com, the companies said.

The program may be extended throughout Europe and North America and
will eventually support other devices, such as PDAs, they added.

IBM is strongly positioned to help top appliance manufacturers such as
Carrier provide new services that increase customer satisfaction, said
Michel Mayer, general manager of Pervasive Computing for IBM.

Carrier dealers, installers and engineers will have individual unit
control and be able to access key customer data, the companies said.

Myappliance will also send fault codes and other diagnostic alerts
instantaneously to mobile phones, or via e-mail, or fax.
