This might be too late to help you... but did you have a disk in the A:
drive when you chose it? If you don't have a disk in the drive when you
choose the icon, you will get the message "A:\ is not accessible The
device is not ready..
No, it is not absolutely necessary to format the harddrive when you install
a new harddrive. It makes things easier if you do, but you don't have to.

Subject: [PCBUILD] A: Drive Not Responding
> Hello All,
> I just installed a new motherboard and processor. (Motherboard: Intel
D845WN Processor: 1.8GHz Pentium4) Everything is working great except the
A:\ drive (3.5" floppy) is not responding. I tried inserting the cable in
every possible orientation but to no avail. What could be wrong. When I
choose the "A drive" icon off "my computer," it tells me that the drive is
not ready/ not accessible. Also when installing a new motherboard, is it
necessary to format the harddrive?
