This is one of the best review sites for cdr hardware: www.cdrlabs.com.
Also www.cdspeed2000.com may have comparisons.

Do a www.Google.com search for "cdrw review"

In these reviews, I found that TEAC makes the fastest reader and most
accurate compared to the top quality makers: #1 - Plextor, #2 Yamahaa #3
TEAC #4 Sony
Ricoh is up there also for quality.
LiteON is improving daily, but have had the worst reading quality based on
errors.

My preference has been Sony because of its ability to read cd's created by
itself and most other cdrw's. Also its price and support.
TEAC 516EB is my preference based on Price/READing/speed.

Plextor remains the top in all areas, but its price exhibits that.

Then of course, you have to decide: SCSI, IDE, I1394 firewire.
SCSI being the fastest and highest quality in durability.
IDE cheaper and most portable.
IE1394 firewire, best for external as just as fast as IDE.
