> a high starch diet probably isn't healthy for most people.
I can see you won't want to join my new list called MCDOUGALL-HEALTH :)
(http://www.drmcdougall.com/ is worth checking out)
Don isn't to thrilled about adding it to his stable of lists, but did offer
to help with the "dirty work" of setting up.
I got a couple of friends, I'm telling you, not a word of a lie, just love
McDougall's very high starch, very low fat diet and are doing extremely
well. One has diabetes and is overweight, the pounds are melting off, her
BGs normal, off meds now, depression history is now gone -- lordy, it was
awful watching her eat a huge plate full of mashed potatoes -- she is an
Atkins drop out
I haven't looked into the details of the McDougalls diet because I've been
a tad swamped with my 3 lists and a couple of other projects -- but I did
email Dr. McDougall and got replies from Johnny himself, real nice chap.
Another friend, he is convinced, no if ands or buts that a high starch low
fat diet is supreme in all ways to all other diets, besides that it is
safe, easy and cheap.
So, I got to thinking, if there was ever going to be a commercial site set
up, it is obvious that a NeanderThin only won't wash, but way back it had
to be just like you suggested with a variety of products -- so, I'm
thinking why confine it to low carb, why not high carb too?
So, if you see me announce a MCDOUGALLS-HEALTH list in the future, you'll
know what I'm up to -- if the right one don't get ya, the left one will.
Atkins = very low carb + high fat
Neanderthin = low to medium carb + normal fat (Ray suggests in his book
that his diet is lower fat)
McDougall = high carb + very low fat
McDougall and Spears are a travelling road show
McDougall like Atkins has cruises, tapes, books and probably t-shirts
The only thing I'm pretty sure of now is that NeanderThin, between you and
me, isn't worth the paper it is written on, I'm pissed off with it and I've
gained 15 pounds -- the more I try to follow it the worse it gets and the
worse I feel
It's back to atkins for me, I want my cream, I want my cheese and besides
I've got the atikins 1972 edition that says coffee is OK :)
BUT, this last week I have found a blend of the neanderthin/atkins to be
very helpful (I lost 5 of those pounds, and got lots more energy)
- I minimize, but don't eleminate cheese
- I have a daily bowl of Kellogg's very high fibre with physillium husk
cereal covered in Splenda and cream (Splenda was on sale this week, the
large box of granular for a US equiv of about a $1.20 -- did I buy Splenda
or what, besides raspberries without cream and splenda suck)
- I'm adopting Bernstein's attitude toward fruit -- no fruit is good, all
fruit is evil
- back are a few sugar snaps (Don is to blame for that), peanuts and
cashews as are roasted macadamia which are expensive enought here $3.98
(c$) for small jar
- green & yellow beans are back because I like them
none of that sounds much like neanderthin, but it's the smaller quantity
influence of neanderthin that counts, plus lots of jerky (pemmican sucks
without dried fruit), chicago blue steaks, I returned to ketchup, mayo etc
but mixing it 50/50 with neanderthin recipes
anyhow, I've been nailed on my atkins-new to explain the atkins/neanderthin
approach which I'll thing about overnite and respond tomorrow
when you check that http://www.drmcdougall.com/ if I recall he has info
stating that his diet is backed by science and research, you might be
interested in some of the references if any or given
there is one problem with all us low carbers (all humans I guess too) we
are bias when we got something fixed in our mind and tend, whether we like
to and even if we try not to, to avoid contrary evidence -- my wife is
just brushing up on her theory of relativety, the Einstein book is 3-4
inches thick, but a fascinating history of what was like to be right and
nobody believe you -- can you imagine believing in "Ether" to explain the
universe?
But what comes so apparent, who the hell is Einstein and what makes him
right -- not likely to be right especially for all times.
Just musing]
all the best
